Most of the time when I think of fast food, I automatically think of processed, unhealthy, high calorie, full of sugar, and carbohydrates. In addition to being in a #lowcarb #keto diet, it can be an inconvenience your friends and partners especially when its time to decide where to go out and eat.
Before, when my partner asks me, “Where do you want to eat?”
My response is usually, “I don’t care. Where would you like to eat?”
But now, when he asks, I reply “Any where that’s low carb.”
It can be socially awkward being on this diet. Actually, it’s becoming more of lifestyle than a diet. People in the office hardly invite me to go to lunch and I noticed the invites to dinners with friends are almost non-existent. Can I blame them? No.
Don’t stress, there are options out there!
We don’t always have to eat-in all the time – go and eat-out!
Fast food restaurants are well aware of #lowcarb #keto. They know that they must accommodate to keep up with their numbers. For example, you can buy a meal with burger, fries and drink. To make it low carb, make your order with no bun, a side salad instead of fries, and unsweetened iced tea. If you drink diet soda, I would suggest Diet Pepsi because it does not contain aspartame. I can usually order any sandwich as long as its nothing breaded and fried. For example, I can get a Beef & Cheddar with no bun, a side chopped salad, and unsweetened ice tea. Also try the following with no bread or no bun… the French dip, Grand Turkey club, or any of Gyro. Things not to order are the chicken sandwiches that are breaded and deep fried.
They know what #lowcarb means. You can almost order any of their value meals and tell them to “make it lowcarb”. However, remember to leave out the ketchup. Ketchup has too much sugar. As long as its not fried you can order a sandwich with no bun, order side salad instead of fries, and unsweetened iced tea. For example, I usually order a low carb Whooper, with side salad, and unsweetened iced tea. They also offered a grilled chicken sandwich with no bun.
Well I usually order the Salmon with no bread and rice, triple broccoli!
Carl’s Jr or Hardee’s
Although the branding is different, they are almost the same. In the west coast they are known as Carl’s Jr. In the east coast, they are known as Hardee’s. They actually came on board when Atkin’s became popular. They were one of the first to offer low carb style burgers. You can order any of their burger low carb. This means they wrap your burger with lettuce. In their menu, they have the “Low Carb It” selections; however, be careful! Some of these offerings has barbecue sauce which has lots of sugar. For condiments, stay away from barbecue and ketchup. They contain a lot sugar.
Order any burger “Animal Style”. They have no side alternatives.
My only go to is the Low Carb Scrambler Breakfast bowl. It features two freshly scrambled eggs, melted American cheese and a generous layer of deliciously crispy bacon, sausage, or both.
Try the following with no bun: Artisan Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Bacon Ranch Grilled Chicken salad (no croutons), Quarter or Double Quarter Pounder with cheese no bun and no ketchup, and a side salad. Just remember, some of their sandwiches automatically comes with ketchup so ask for no ketchup when ordering.
I order the plate. This comes with two entree and a side. So I usually pick is the super greens (broccoli, cabbage, and kale) which has 5 net carbs, and I pick two servings of chicken teriyaki (no sauce). If order the sauce that usually has 8 grams of sugar which means 8 grams of carbohydrates. So, order it with no sauce if you are counting your carbs.
I started loving Subway again, because you can get any of their sandwiches salad style (6 inch or foot long). I can even order their breakfast sandwiches salad style. Just remember the term “salad style”.
Any PHO restaurant
I go to a pho restaurant and order any of the pho with no noodles. If available, as them to add more vegetables. Do not use hoisin sauce. I usually use fish sauce, lime, and sriracha.
Same thing with Wendy’s order any of their burgers or grilled chicken sandwiches with no bun, order side salad instead of fries, and unsweetened iced tea.
This pretty much sums up for now. When it comes to restaurant, do not be afraid to be creative with their offerings. Most restaurants should accommodate. If you come up with something, feel free to comment and share the knowledge.
